What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

Salary: $121,316.00 (Step 01) to $157,709.00 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

This is an interdisciplinary position that may be filled as a Biologist or Ecologist.

The position serves as the Assistant Center Director for a multi-location USGS science center that includes major facilities in MD, MA, WV, and employees in other locations. The science center and its affiliated labs are responsible for implementing research and monitoring that improve the Department of Interior’s understanding and management of the nation’s natural resources. The center’s research program includes approximately 150 scientific and science support personnel responsible for research efforts in the areas of fisheries, avian, and other wildlife population dynamics and ecology, animal health, disease and toxicology, and quantitative analyses to support decisions of natural resource agencies in the region, nationally, and internationally. The Assistant Center Director serves as a major advisor to the Center Director, is an active participant on the center’s management team, serves as the senior onsite manager in the absence of the Center Director and Deputy Center Director, and provides day-to-day support to the center enabling employees to effectively and efficiently conduct high priority science programs.

As a Supervisory Interdisciplinary Biologist/Ecologist within the Leetown Science Center and Patuxent Wildlife Research Center some of your specific duties will include:

  • Work directly with the Center Director and Deputy Center Director to provide day-today leadership and management to all center science and administrative programs.
  • Lead, manage and supervise four Capability Team Managers, and the center’s Facility Operations and Equipment Chief.
  • Assist Center Director and Deputy Center Director in ensuring strategic, sustainable and consistent practices across the center that facilitate efficient and effective operations in support of the center’s vision, mission and goals.
  • Clearly define problems, challenges and opportunities, and establish intermediate and long-range capability team program strategies to establish high performing science teams, maintain cutting-edge science capabilities, and align science project investments with critical science needs of DOI and partners.
  • Provide input to Center Director and Deputy Center Director on assignment of center personnel, and allocation, management and forecasts of center budgets for in-year and out-year center health, planning and management.
  • Plan, coordinate, execute, and manage broad scientific programs of the center’s capability teams, and consult with Deputy Center Director to support integrated project teams, to include resource allocation decisions and staffing decisions required to achieve science objectives of the Center.
  • Provide scientific and technical advice and guidance to natural resource science and management agency officials on regional, national and international scientific issues.
  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
